Summerhill neighbourhood is named after the CP transport baron Charles Thompson's mansion Summer Hill which was located on what is now Summerhill Gardens. Originally the grounds of Summer Hill were developed as an amusement park and dance pavillion until an heir subdivided the 200 acre plot of land in the 1860s.
The neighbourhood developed around the famous Summerhill landmark - the railway station which is now an LCBO. When the station closed the area started to decline until the opening of the Summerhill subway station in the 1950s.
Summerhill boasts many attributes that make it a popular and prestigious neighbourhood in which to live. Pretty Victorian and Edwardian houses nestle on tree-lined streets. The stores and restuarants on Yonge are some of the best in Toronto and the Summerhill subway offers a quick communte to downtown.
